Job turnover rates and residual wage dispersion

چکیده

Argentina experienced an important increase in wage dispersion in the last 20 years. This increase occurred not only across different education groups, but also within these groups. In spite of exceptional economic growth rates, after the 2001/2002 macroeconomic crisis, residual inequality remained high. This paper applies a search model with exogenous human capital accumulation to Argentinean data to investigate the role of high job turnover rates in accounting for the residual inequality’s increase occurred since the onset of the crisis. I find that the contemporaneous increase in the job separation rate can account quite precisely for the observed increase in residual inequality. This highlights one aspect of the social costs associated with the crisis and not considered yet in the literature: a widening of the earnings distribution.

Frictional Wage Dispersion in Search Models: A Quantitative Assessment

Standard search and matching models of equilibrium unemployment, once properly calibrated, can generate only a small amount of frictional wage dispersion, i.e., wage differentials among ex-ante similar workers induced purely by search frictions. We derive this result for a specific measure of wage dispersion—the ratio between the average wage and the lowest (reservation) wage paid. We show that...

Wage Dispersion and Allocation of Jobs

This paper use Swedish establishment-level panel data on job turnover and wages to test the hypothesis of a positive relation between job reallocation and degree of wage compression as proposed by Bertola & Rogerson (1997). The effect of wage dispersion on job turnover is negative and significant in the manufacturing sector. The wage compression effect is stronger on job destruction than on job...

Wage Dispersion and Labor Turnover with Adverse Selection

We consider a model of on-the-job search where firms offer long-term wage contracts to workers of different ability. Firms do not observe worker ability upon hiring but learn it gradually over time. With sufficiently strong information frictions, low-wage firms offer separating contracts and hire all types of workers in equilibrium, whereas high-wage firms offer pooling contracts designed to re...

Job Mobility, Wage Dispersion, and Asymmetric Information

This paper develops a model of job mobility and wage dispersion with asymmetric information. Contrary to the existing models in which the superior information of current employers lead to market collapse, this model generates a unique equilibrium outcome in which a) positive turnover exists and b) identical workers can be paid differently. The model implies that, in the presence of technologica...
